Description
I was inspired by ma's old home remedy of using liniment to "cure" stomachaches to create a mock advertisement for a fake liniment that could have been around in the early 20th century. Liniment you could take orally (rather than by rubbing it on your body--or that of your horse...) is not fiction. In fact, it's still being sold today. However, I took liberties with ingredients--I don't know if anyone ever used all of them together to create a concoction, but it wasn't unusual for some or most of the ingredients to be found in at least one ingestible tonic, maybe just not in combination--for my invented product. Patent medicines were very popular in the late 19th century through the early part of the 20th century. Although many were found to be false claims peddled by charlatans at best, and dangerous at worst, some did seem to have health benefits; and others managed to last, albeit as refreshments or supplements. I have a slightly odd sense of humor so I found the idea of painting a mock, pseudo-retro ad for a fake product by a made-up company to be fun and funny. I especially enjoyed creating the "face" of the company. I hope you enjoy.
